Reference scriptures: Joshua 4:1-24

People like monuments, in Burundi and in other countries, in towns and in villages, as you travel you see monuments. Some are for prominent individuals or important events that people want preserved after generations. In the Bible, there are also several monuments. Even as we speak today, we really need to build monuments of events that happen in our spiritual lives so that we do not forget them. One of the most serious problems is that we are tempted to build monuments of bad things that happened to us, but forget to build those of good things and God’s miracles that happened to us.

Why should we build monuments of God’s miracles to our lives?

  1. Monuments remind us the faithfulness of God

From verse 4 to 7, the faithfulness of God means how He doesn’t change with time. He a stable God. He wanted people to build a monument for the next generations to be reminded of what God did. Marching on the red sea, crossing the Jordan as mere road were not to be forgotten, no matter which generation that came.

When the spies went in the promised land and came back with terribly threatening reports, the Israelites thought that going back to the Egyptian bondage was a better choice. This was completely due to the fact that they had forgotten what God had done for them.

  1. Monuments remind us the power of God

God’s faithfulness shows us He cares about us, He is closer than what we may imagine. Beyond His willingness to save us, God has the most powerful hand over everything, every situation; He is omnipotent, all-powerful. He fed His people in the most unusual ways, sending manna, growing their clothes as people grew with them, all those things were beyond human understanding, but God did them anyway.

Remembering the impossible situations God took us away from, the ones that looked quite impossible in our eyes, the ones that we could never be able to face build that confidence in us and convince us that the God who has never failed is not failing this time. His mighty hand will never be weak, not tomorrow or after the next generation.

  1. Monuments remind us the love God has for us

All the things that God does for us, the miracles that will stay alive in our memory are not because we were lovable, that we were so righteous that God could not look away. They are because of the love He has loved us, He who chose us when we didn’t really deserve Him.

May we keep build moments that helps us always be grateful to God for His faithfulness, His power, and His love that are always renewed for our good. If He did it before, He will do it over and over again. May we always remember Jesus died for us, the most important price one could ever pay for the one they would sacrifice for.
