Shammah Temple Fellowship: Sermon of Sunday May 18, 2025
By Pastor Bernard Nduwayo
Theme: What Truth that Gives Believers Freedom?
Reference scriptures: Romans 5:1-11
There’s truth someone knows and understands how things go, how free they should walk and how easier their life can go. Knowledge is important, knowledge of the truth is liberating and makes one’s life more secure and safer. Spiritually also, there’s understanding, without which Believers cannot enjoy they freedom God has given them through salvation.
But what should Believers know to become free?
- That there is no more enmity between God and Believers
Verses 1 and 2 in the passage show us how much we were enemies of God because of sin. However, after believing in God, freedom came through the cross. Jesus solved it all at once and responded efficiently the issue of “all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory” and went in our own place of sinners.
“And although you were at one time estranged and alienated and hostile-minded [toward Him], participating in evil things, yet Christ has now reconciled you [to God] in His physical body through death, in order to present you before the Father holy and blameless and beyond reproach,” Colossians 1:21&22.
These truths are crucial in Believers’ lives, but if they do not know them, they can still be fooled and live as if they are still enchained, bearing the same burdens. Without these truths, Believers easily fall for false teachings and prophecies that do not point to the cross and salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
How does understanding there is no longer enmity between God and us help us?
- We do not worry much about trying times and battles along our way.
“And not only this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance; and endurance, proven character (spiritual maturity), and proven character, hope and confident assurance [of eternal salvation],” (Romans 5:3&4).
- We get closer to God and discuss with Him fearlessly
“Therefore, let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment],” (Hebrew 4:16).
- That if Jesus’ love made Him die for me when I was still His enemy, there’s nothing He can refuse me now that we are friends
There was no worth from our end to motivate Jesus to come save us, we were meant to be damned for our own sins and trespasses. Logic suggests that the one who would like to sacrifice should do it for the good, righteous people. However, Jesus did it for the unholy, the unfit, the villain…
Think about this for a minute. If Jesus was able to do that for us when we were sinners and enemies to God, now that we are always in His presence, so close and related to His presence, what will He do for us?
What does knowing this truth help us achieve?
- We have assurance that what we pray for, we shall get it.
God gave up His only begotten son foe me and you, sinners who are not worth the mercy. Now that we are His, we have assurance that when we ask, He gives us. “He who did not spare [even] His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32.
When you are waiting for Him to answer your prayer, make sure the prayer is in line with God’s will and wait. He’s never late, His timing is perfect, ours can wait.
To wrap up, as Believers, we need to understand these truths and free us from human understanding and considerations that can keep us away from God’s way of understanding things. Knowing that there is no longer enmity between us and God gives us the assurance to approach Him with boldness and happiness we need more than any other communication from anyone. Also, understanding that He cares for us and therefore will give us anything [according to His will] that we ask for further shows us how deep our relationship has gone with God. May we know these profound truths and be able to live according to them as we glorify the name of our Lord God.
