Why should we follow Jesus?

Shammah Temple Fellowship: Sermon of Sunday September 21, 2025

By Claver Nitonde

Theme: Why should we follow Jesus?

Reference scriptures: John 21:1-25

As cattle follows the shepherd when they hear them speak or approach, they trust him, they follow him without much calculus. The same happens to us when following Jesus, knowing He is our Lord and that He is our shepherd. Why should we do that?

Why should we follow Jesus?

  1. Because He cares about His people’s worries

When Jesus found the disciples fishing, where they had spent a whole night without a single catch, He came and showed them that He really cares about His people’s worries. Jesus’ question and attitude were so appealing, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”. Knowing their nets had no fish and they were at the point of giving up, of letting it all go. However, Jesus brought the hope they so needed, He brought them the relief they yeaned for, the miracle they needed to make it to the next destination, not because of their techniques and experience in fishing not because of the favorable fishing conditions and tools at their disposal.

The Lord also does that, He provides for us, not because we are righteous, but because of who He is – the merciful Lord of ours.

  1. Because He serves those He leads

These fishers had spent the night with no one catch. Surprisingly, He came all the way to the shores and serve them by providing for them. Jesus’ action was the one of a servant to his own master, however, He did it to the ones who were supposed to serve Him. He had all the rights and privileges to rather send them to do things and ask them to serve Him, but He chose to serve the disciples, even when they were not so faithful to Him.

It was also a call to them to serve others, to serve those who were supposed to serve them, those they were supposed to lead and command.

  1. He trusts those under His responsibility

Peter was probably the one who convinced the rest to go with him fishing, while Jesus had already taken them out of the lakes and given them the responsibilities in His kingdom. It’s also the same Peter who had denied Him and even knowing about Him when things got difficult. However, here we see Jesus entrusting Peter with even more responsibilities – the one of “feeding my sheep”. It wasn’t expected of Jesus to do such a merciful act.

In short, as Believers, we should follow Jesus, even when we do not deserve it. Our Lord cares about us, He serves us, He entrusts us with huge responsibilities. Nothing can be more rewarding to us, sinners, who were saved by the blood of Jesus, than serving Him and following Him with no reserve.
